Reviews by Revi

José Raúl Capablanca (La Habana 1888 - New York 1942). He was world chess champion from 1921 to 1927, when he lost the title to Alexander Alekhine in Buenos Aires. At the age of twenty, without having opened a chess book, he faced the great Frank Marshall, with the surprising result 8-1 and 14 draws. Three years later, in the prestigious San Sebastián tournament of 1911, he won the beauty prize against the great Ossip Berstein, who had objected to the participation of the Cuban in the tournament for considering him too young and inexperienced. Technique, intuition, speed, aesthetic sense, elegance, effectiveness, are some of the virtues that characterized the game of Capablanca. Some comments about Capablanca: "His depth is that of a mathematician, not that of a poet. His wit is Roman, not Greek ". Emanuel Lasker "You can not intimidate Capablanca with dubious or unhealthy sacrifices. If he has enough time to reflect, he weighs the combination exactly and rigorously and reveals its weaknesses ". Emanuel Lasker "Pulls plays out of the sleeve". Jacques Mieses Foundations of chess describes strategic principles in the endgame and in the middle game, which are still valid today. He accurately analyzes thirteen games against first-line rivals: Rubinstein, Marshall or Mieses, among others. Elementary chess lessons was an excellent work of Capablanca that was disseminated, in February 1942, for the whole Hispanic world through the RCA Víctor microphones, from the National Broadcasting Company of New York.
