Gari Kasparov has dominated the world of chess for over twenty years and is undoubtedly the greatest player of the modern era. His dynamic interpretation of chess and his profound preparation have had a spectacular impact on his playing style, setting a model that is currently followed by most ambitious young players. Those who wish to emulate Kasparov’s success, study his methods and, above all, his games.

In this book, the first of two volumes, Igor Stohl has selected the 74 best and most instructive games by Kasparov played between 1973 and 1993, commenting on them in great detail, emphasizing the gestation of the thought process underlying Kasparov’s decisions, as well as the concepts behind his moves. Stohl has consulted a great variety of sources, including Kasparov’s own comments, and provides us with a notable diversity of new perspectives on these milestones of modern chess, along with numerous analytical revelations.

Gari Kasparov was born in 1963, and entered the scene in the late seventies with a series of remarkable results in Soviet and international tournaments. In 1985 he proclaimed himself the youngest World Champion of all time, defeating Anatoli Karpov in an epic struggle. Twenty years later he is an internationally renowned figure, not only among chess lovers, but also among the general public, as he has made the headlines of newspapers all over the world with significant events, such as his matches against IBM’s supercomputer Deep Blue, and his 1999 game against internet users from all over the planet.

Igor Stohl is a well-known Grandmaster from Slovakia, who participates in several national team championships and has a great reputation as an opening theoretician. His meticulous comments are regularly published in Ceskoslovensky Sach, Informator and ChessBase Magazine. His previous book, Instructive Modern Chess Masterpieces, was awarded best book of the year by the US Chess Federation.
